Lead. Communicate. Endure.

The 1st Annual Soft Skills Mini Symposium

Presented by Buckhall VFD

Saturday, September 26

10 AM – 3 PM

About the Event

This event is created to help Firefighters, EMS, and volunteers hone in on soft skills. Soft skills are defined as a set of personal attributes, behaviors, and social attitudes that enable individuals to interact effectively with others in a workplace or social environment. There are so many traits that fall under this category, but we chose three to start with. These are not skills that are inherently taught in schools or training, but through experience. In this symposium, we hope to give you the resources needed to help you become experts in these skills. We hope you will join us!

Itinerary

10 am: Opening remarks by Buckhall’s own Chief Trammell and MC Chief LaBelle

10:15 am: Tiger Schmittendorf

“From the Xbox to the Box Alarm” is an offline conversation about connecting with an online generation.
I’ve had seasoned firefighters tell me how this has changed their relationship with their firefighters AND their kids (provided they can differentiate between the two!); and I’ve had young firefighters tell me how it has completely changed their conversations with the officers they report to.
Many think we’re experiencing the most disconnected generations ever. This Xbox Live conversation shows us how we’re much closer than we give each other credit for. That’s what it’s all about.

12 pm: Lunch

1 pm: Chris Bellios

“Principles of Leadership”

2 pm: Vickie Taylor
To be a successful first responder, you must be able to focus under high demand in order to deliver the best possible service. This session will provide a quick overview of the reality of resilience (it’s more than bouncing back!) and evidence-based strategies to assist you in creating your own tactical wellness plan. When these strategies are used on a regular basis, they can help prevent significant stress and shorten the amount of time you spend experiencing extreme stress.

3 pm: Closing remarks and Social Hour
